During the mid-nineteenth century the US Federal government had a keen interest in exploring and charting the lands of the southwestern United States which were little known at the time. The results of many of these expeditions were compiled and published in reports by the Smithsonian Institution which had been founded in 1846. Of these the United States and Mexican Boundary Survey was a masterwork of the time being beautifully illustrated by many of the best engravers of the period.
