John & Elizabeth Gould: "The Golden Pheasant"

$5,800.00

This beautiful hand-colored folio lithograph is from the esteemed work of John & Elizabeth Gould's the Birds of Australia. The work was published in London by Richard and John E. Taylor for the authors between 1840 and 1869. Over 300 new species of Australian birds were identified throughout the time the volumes were produced and it remains today one of the most comprehensive works on Australian ornithology ever published. Notable is the hand of Elizabeth Gould who travelled with her husband to Australia in 1838. While there she completed over 600 sketches of Australian birds which became the foundation of Birds of Australia.

This originally hand-colored engraving was examined carefully before framing and is a sharp impression on a bright paper sheet.  This is a beautiful example with virtually no apparent spotting save a couple of specks that resulted from the original painting of the plate. The birds are heightened with gum arabic and the entire scene is masterfully colored. The supporting text is present and included in an envelope attached to the verso of the frame.  Summary conventions:  Excellent, fine, A.

All materials used in framing meet museum conservation standards.  The glass deployed is high quality Museum glass which is UV resistant and anti-reflective allowing the image to be viewed from any angle with minimal internal reflections to distract the viewer.  The frame is wood that has been gilt and there is a double mat presented.  The colors chosen for the matts subtly emphasize the coloring of the scene without drawing away the attention of the viewer. The supporting text is present and included in an envelope to the verso of the framed image. Hanger for wall display is installed.

Dimensions:

Overall frame size: 30½” x 23

Opening size: 21⅛" x 14⅛"
