Martinet: Snowy Owl - FM 010
We are happy to present a good number of images from the classic eighteenth century work Histoire Naturelle Des Oiseaux. The illustrations are distinctly 18th-century in conception and style, generally with a hint of the bird’s habitat, such as a tree branch, rock or water and bounded by a yellow border. The work was issued in 42 parts over the years 1765 to 1780 and edited by Georges-Louis Marie Leclerc, the Count of Buffon. This was one of two major Buffon works, collectively the most comprehensive French natural history sets of their time. LeClerc’s good fortune was to employ Francois Martinet, who was the French court engraver and artist, to execute the 1008 engravings that appear in the work. The 5x7 card is blank inside and comes with an accompanying envelope - shipping is free.
