During the nineteenth century it was popular to produce encyclopedic natural histories covering many topics. One of these was published in Germany in the mid 1800’s and was titled “Das Buch der Welt” or The Book of the World. The publishers utilized steel plate engraving and the illustrations were hand colored with a bright palette different from many other works of the time.
