Bernard Picart was one of the great book illustrators of the early eighteenth century, his final work being the spectacular Temple of the Muses published in 1733. Illustrating the fables of Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Picart’s engravings reflect the influence of the fading Baroque period with strong Rococo elements infused into the 60 engravings created for the book.
