Antoine Francois Prévost, usually called Abbé Prévost, was a French writer, translator, and historian who lived in the eighteenth century. As a young man he was sent to a Jesuit college as a novice, but his literary activities repeatedly interfered with his monastic life.  He deserted the monastery and spent several years travelling eventually finding his way to London.  Here he found great success in literary circles editing the literary journal Le pour et le contre. His main work was Histoire Générale des Voyages,  a spectacular 20 volume atlas of the world containing maps, plans of cities, scenic views and natural history images.
